Artist Statement

I have created art since I was a teenager. I studied art and applied design at the University of Maryland, sculpture at the Washington Studio School and pottery at the Glen Echo Pottery.  For 25 years, I was an elementary and middle school art teacher.  I was profoundly influenced by the playful and interactive energy that my young students brought to their projects, and I strive to apply the same creative approach to my own work. Currently I'm working at Harmony Hall arts center as the ceramics instructor.

My work has recently been juried into exhibits in several galleries, including Harmony Hall,  Annmarie Gardens, Artists and Makers, The Popcorn Gallery at Glen Echo, and The Del Ray Artisans Gallery.

This small tray was selected for the Proximity Show at the Clay Coop last August. I like the way the wood ash seems to brush across the surface, creating a soft subtle change in color.

New Strata sculpture.

Small wood fired vase

This charming vase was wood fired with an ash glaze and small brushwork added with black slip. I love the results. It is snowing today, the first day of spring. Maybe I will pick flowers in a few days.
